(Meredith) – A man upset about a $30 rent increase murdered his landlord because of it, police said in a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, and now Jason Tilley, 37, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Police said Tilley shot his landlord in the back of the head at an apartment complex in Cudahy, Wisconsin.
Moments before the shooting, Tilley said he handed the landlord $560 in cash for rent. He was told rent was being increased by $30, which upset him, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
The 37-year-old then pulled out his handgun and aimed it at the victim’s head, a criminal complaint states. Tilley told detectives he then hid the landlord’s body and stole money from his pockets.
Tilley said he went to have some beers before going back home and getting up for work the next morning
The victim’s wife reported him missing on March 1. The next day, officers went to the apartment building and discovered his body in a garage.
Police arrested Tilley just one day after finding the landlord’s body. His first court appearance was on Wednesday, March 7.
