Rhode Island bill would charge $20 to access porn

Posted: Updated:

(Meredith) -- A bill introduced in Rhode Island would have residents pay a $20 fee to access "sexual content and patently offensive material" online. By default, the internet providers would block those sites for everyone, and then unlock them once the fee had been paid.

The Providence Journal reports each fee would be channeled to the attorney general and used to fund the Council on Human Trafficking.

The bill also puts pressure on internet providers which would be responsible for blocking the sexually explicit content. Internet providers would be asked to provide a way for residents to report any offensive content that slipped through unnoticed, and could even face legal action for every unblocked site.
