SHAWNEE, MISSION, KS (KCTV5/AP) -

The Shawnee Mission Board of Education has named Michael Fulton as its new superintendent.

Fulton is currently serving as superintendent of the Pattonville School District in the greater St. Louis area.

He was one of three finalists named last week by the school district.

“The Shawnee Mission Board of Education is excited to introduce Dr. Michael Fulton as our new superintendent," said Brad Stratton, president of the Shawnee Mission Board of Education. in a statement. "After a lengthy and engaging search process, Dr. Fulton rose to the top as the right leader for our district, both now and into the future. We are very grateful to the greater Shawnee Mission community for all the input, engagement and insight into our search process as we moved through each step over the past months. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Fulton to the Shawnee Mission family as we embark on the next chapter of new beginnings in the Shawnee Mission school district."

Fulton replaces Jim Hinson, who was just 54 when he announced in April that he was retiring to spend more time with his family. Hinson became a lightning rod in part because of his support of former Gov. Sam Brownback's 2015 plan to replace the school finance formula with block grants. That policy later was ruled unconstitutional.

The district is expected to play a role as lawmakers craft a new school finance formula.

Blane McCann and Michael Muñoz were the two other finalists.
