OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

Firefighters rescued a dog Friday morning after she wandered onto a small pond in south Olathe and became stranded.

Diane and Jerry Pollitt say they’re surprised their dog is alive.

The Pollitts say their three-year-old Wheaten terrier named Willow decided to go on an adventure around the neighborhood and ended up in a pond nearby. She had fallen through the ice and stuck in the mud.

“The water was only about two-feet deep but the mud was about three-feet deep,” said Kevin Hilboldt with the Olathe Fire Department.

Hilboldt had to put on a protective suit before getting in the freezing pond.

“It’s insulated, so it keeps us dry and it keeps us warm,” he said.

However, the mud proved to be more of a problem than the cold.

“It ended up coming up to about my waist,” Hilboldt said.

The Pollitts say their surprised Willow only has a few bruises. They thought the cold water and ice would have done more damage.

But, Willow is back to being herself, laying in her favorite spot like nothing happened.

“When he got to her, I felt so much better when he got out there to her,” Diane Pollitt said.

The fire department wants to stress do not go out on the ice. Call 911 for help if something like this ever happens to you.
