(CNN/Meredith) – In North Carolina, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating after they said the body of a woman was found in a mobile home. Officials believe it had been there for several months.
Authorities have identified the dead woman as Joyce Eileen Law, 72.
Bonnie Cooley, a family friend, said she’s known the family for more than 25 years.
“He said that when she died that he could not physically let go of her body,” Cooley said, who added that the mother died Jan. 2, 2017.
Last Thursday, authorities say they were asked to check on the woman living off McArthur Pond Road. Deputies questioned the son on his mother's whereabouts, that's when they say he showed them her body.
Also discovered inside the home - a deceased dog. Cooley says the pet’s corpse had been there since October.
"He was not in a good place as far as mental health at all. Nobody can be and make those kinds of decisions."
Cooley says the son suffers depression and that he's currently staying with friends out of state. A sign on the door says the trailer is condemned. Authorities say they do not suspect foul play.
They are still awaiting autopsy results to determine what if any charges will follow.
