(Meredith) – More than 130 countries are observing “Safer Internet Day” today, which aims to raise awareness of online issues like cyberbullying and using social networks properly.
According to Safer Internet Day’s website, the event began in 2004 as an initiative of the European Union SafeBorders project and has spread across the world.
Since its launch, the organization has been teaching children and adults how to use the internet in a positive and constructive way.
This year's theme is "Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you." According to their website, the theme:
"Is a call to action for every stakeholder – children and young people, parents and caregivers, teachers, educators and social workers, as well as industry, decision maker, and politicians – to play their part in creating a better internet for everyone, in particular, the youngest users out there."
