KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Kansas City Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its members.

Fire Academy Lead Instructor Roger Rhoads lost his life from what officials say is an occupational illness.

Prior to teaching at the academy, Rhoads was assigned to Rescue 9, a heavy rescue company at KCFD Station 35.

Officials did not share the name of the illness or how Rhoads contracted it.

The department asks that the community keep Rhoads’ family, members of the IAFF Local 42 and the KCFD in their thoughts and prayers.
