LINWOOD, KS (KCTV) -

A group of parents and kids are devastated after getting word that the Muscular Dystrophy Association is discontinuing their summer camp.

About two dozen campers, parents and counselors gathered Monday to figure out what they can do to keep the camp in place.

The camp for Kansas and Missouri was in Linwood, at a place called Tall Oaks.

It was specifically for kids with neuromuscular diseases like muscular dystrophy and featured adapted versions of ziplining, archery and other physical activities most of the kids are otherwise restricted from.

On Friday, parents received a letter that the camp was no longer – because the MDA was “enhancing” the summer camp program – to include a nationwide range of options.

"I think the worst part was knowing I had to break it to Lindsay because this is her favorite thing," parent Tracy Cochran said.

The MDA told KCTV5 only that they were enhancing their program to provide “updated programming and a focus on best-in-class facilities.”

They did not respond to questions about whether they received complaints about existing programs or how many existing camps are closing.
