Kansas and Missouri are currently the sickest states in the U.S. when it comes to the flu virus. So much so that it's shut down one school in the Kansas City area.

At St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School in Leawood, school wasn’t in session today. Instead, there were workers inside spraying everything down, cleaning, and killing any lingering germs.

At one point this week, more than 100 students had to stay home because of the bug that's been going around.

Julie Sano's children already had the flu at the end of last year, but with dozens of their classmates sick, a Friday home from school was a day for her kids to rest.

“He slept until 10 because he thinks he's a teenager,” she said. “He's been playing basketball. His older brother is at the movies.”

All of her children attend the school.

Administrators told KCTV5 News that cleaning crews were using germ-killing foggers and wiping down surfaces inside. They canceled some school events and postponed a student play until next week.

“School's going to plenty clean when we come back next week,” said Chris Arth, Parish Administrator. “Most importantly, we'll get everyone rested, everyone well.”

Sano has been taking some extra precautions at home, too.

“I've been cleaning a lot more recently,” she said.

Also, she thinks the district is doing the right thing by taking action.

“We're happy they're doing this,” she said. “Happy they're cleaning everything and we can start over.”

The school will still host a basketball game tomorrow.

Some parents told KCTV5 News off-camera that they had already planned to keep their kids home to keep them from catching a bug.
