OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Fire crews are working to restore power after flames displaced 13 people at an Overland Park apartment complex early Friday morning.

The fire started at about 2 a.m. at the Meadowlark Hill Apartments, located at 9151 Robinson Street.

Four units were affected by the flames and approximately 20 people were forced to rush out and wait at the complex clubhouse as crews battled flames affecting their homes.

Minor injuries were reported. Multiple people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene.

The fire was contained to three of those apartments. The fourth unit had very bad smoke damage. The Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced.

"KCP&L are here working. So, we can keep the heat and light on for folks so we can re-occupy parts of the building that we can so right now we’re winding down," Overland Park Fire Chief Bryan Dehner said.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames after about two hours.

They had to cut a hole in the roof to get to the flames and fight them.

"The fire was labor-intensive. The stuff between the ceiling and the rooftop, it just takes a lot of folks in efforts to rip the sheetrock down, cut through the roof, just open up and expose the fire in those types of things," Dehner said.

They said that, because of the age of the apartments, there were no sprinklers to help fight the fire.

"This is a building that was built before sprinklers, so that was not a requirement at the time," Dehner said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters said it seems that it began outside the building and made its way inside.
