FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

The Midwest is in the middle of its worst flu season in years and doctors say it’s not too late to get a flu shot.

One organization is helping people out by offering the shot free of charge.

Centra Care Clinic is offering up free flu shots at all of their locations on both Thursday and Friday.

The health department says in 2018, the Kansas City area is seeing not only influenza A, but B as well. Officials say 10 people in Kansas City have been killed by the flu.

Local doctors say emergency rooms are full of people testing positive for flu and a variety of other illnesses.

Some areas around the country are seeing a shortage of Tamiflu, the antiviral drug that can shorten the flu by about a day. Shortages have been reported in Wichita, KS. Kansas City area doctors say they are well stocked.

So far, the flu has killed 37 children across the country.

Free shots are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., while supplies last.

Experts want to remind people that the best way to prevent the flu is through hand washing.

For those who do get the flu, experts ask that people not go into work or school until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours without the help of Tylenol or Advil.

An employment consulting firm estimates the flu virus will cause a million adults to miss at least four days of work. That adds up to more than $9 billion worth of lost work.

Health officials also urge pregnant women or people with underlying health conditions to get protection as early as possible.
