KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The trade between the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins is the biggest story in the NFL right now.

Social media is an early indication of that.

Several Chiefs players, now former teammates of quarterback Alex Smith, paid tribute to the quarterback.

"The ultimate leader of men on the field and one of the best teammates you could possibly have in the locker room," center Mitch Morse wrote. "I owe Alex a great deal for helping me learn how to be a professional. Wish you all the best!"

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill tweeted, "Brother for life" and cornerback Marcus Peters tweeted "11," which is Smith's jersey number.

On The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce spoke glowingly of Smith.

"I saw something on Twitter and then I had my girlfriend shoot me a text saying what is going on with Alex," Kelce said. "I know we have to wait until March for it to happen, but as a guy who owes a lot of my success to Alex, it's hard for me to part ways of sorts. Until it's official I'm waiting to see how it all shakes out. It was news that I wasn't trying to hear."

The trade does not become official until March.
