KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A coordinated and join search operation took place at the troubled Jackson County Detention Center Wednesday morning in search of contraband.

According to Diana Turner, the acting director of the Jackson County Department of Corrections, raids like this are a routine event and are going to be happening more often. County officials say today's raid was in support of an effort to maintain the safety and security of inmates.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson County Detention Center's corrections emergency response team teamed up with 30 officers. Jail staff contacted Sheriff Mike Sharp about contraband inside some of the jail cells.

“This time, we’re not looking at jail employees helping get contraband in. Now, we have jail employees that are telling us what they see and what they know that needs to be taken care of, and we’re helping them and assisting them in any way we can," Sharp said.

Sharp didn’t say if deputies found anything.

According to Turner, this wasn’t part of a bigger investigation. She said they do these type of searches on a routine basis. However, this time was a significant targeted search.

“It does take a great deal of manpower and specialization, if you will, to be able to do a large area at one time with multiple inmates involved ... which is why we brought the sheriff’s department in to help us with this operation," she said.

The search happened on the seventh floor of the jail in four pods.
