Should dogs qualify for food stamps? Some people think so

Posted: Updated:

(Meredith) — Almost 90,000 people have signed a petition to make dogs eligible for food stamps. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides funding to over 40 million low-income families each year to be spent on food. This petition could potentially allow those funds to be spent on pet food as well.

The online petition on the Care2 website argues that if a family's financial situation takes a turn for the worse, and they can no longer afford dog food, they shouldn't have to give up their pets. It says, "For most people, pets are considered family, not property."

The petition has already been signed over 89,000 times and if it reaches its 90,000 signature goal, it will be presented to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for consideration.
