KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Kansas City Police Department is looking to expand, but they’re looking for officers with four legs instead of two.

The department needs to add a few more horses to its mounted patrol division. However, finding horses that can deal with crowds has not been easy.

The department is looking for horses between the ages of 6 and 9 years old. They would like to have draft horses or draft crosses.

“It’s been quite a challenge,” said Sgt. Joey Roberts with the department’s mounted patrol. “The disposition factor is probably the biggest thing.”

The horses need to have an easy temperament because they will be in high-stress situations. And, the horses will have to fit within the department budget of $6,000 to $20,000.

However, Kansas City isn’t alone in the search to find very specific horses.

“New York and Cincinnati and New Orleans, you’re going to see draft crosses,” Roberts said.

A draft crossbreed can be any large draft horse, a workhorse, like a Belgium draft or a Clydesdale bred with a smaller horse like a quarter horse.  They are sturdy but smaller than a normal working draft horse.

Roberts says his division would be fully staffed with 10 riders and mounts.
