OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Students at Shawnee Mission North opened the doors to their new coffee shop called “Brickhouse” on Friday morning.

Whether you’re a student or you’re a teacher,

“It feels really good,” said senior McKinley Callin. “It's like a real big accomplishment that we as students get to have a business here and that other students are gonna come here and support us.”

“I am thrilled that it's here,” said teacher Melissa Guinto. “I love the fact that we can come and get good coffee. I love that The Roasterie is partnering with us.”

Everyone at Shawnee Mission North seemed excited about Brickhouse.

On Friday morning, after months of preparation, the doors opened up

“Our students chose the exact blend we would serve, and The Roasterie is generous enough to allow us to name that blend,” said teacher Cody Fothergill. “So, the name of the coffee shop is Brickhouse Coffee, because we are The Brickhouse and proud to be that, but the name of the blend itself it The Brickhouse.”

“I think, for our students, it builds morale, it builds school spirit, and really it teaches them kind of on-the-job training,” said teacher Dre Carnegie.

While the menu is limited now, an expansion could come within the next year.

“Hopefully soon we'll have some food items and we'll have hot chocolate and maybe as early as next year have an espresso machine, as well,” Fothergill said.

The students behind the counter said that, besides it being a fun way to socialize, it’s also a practical way to put their skills to use.

“This is a really useful skill,” Callin said, “learning how to manage money, how to market our products, and how to get our products out there so people will buy them and we can make a profit.”

The money raised through the shop will partially go towards competitions for business and marketing students involved in DECA. It may also go to different organizations who don’t have funds at the moment.
