KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A four-year-old boy in Grain Valley, MO, is in the hospital after being shot while he and another young boy were handling a loaded gun.

Police say it happened at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at a home in the 900 block of Dogwood Drive.

Officers say that boy and his 6-year-old brother were playing with the gun when it fired.

The young boy suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Police haven't said if they plan to arrest anyone, but they stress the need for responsible gun use and storage.

"Make sure the safety of those is consistently enforced," said Chief David Starbuck with the Grain Valley Police Department. "That could include buying gun locks where the handguns or other guns are inoperable, or keeping them unloaded, but the bottom line is: keep them safe and secure in a locked area where kids do not have access to them."

Many police departments offer free gun locks when supplies are available. Starbuck said that if you can't get one from your police department, try checking local hardware stores.
