KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The potential impact of a shutdown on your tax return still remains to be seen. Tax professionals say, regardless, getting them done quickly is still their best advice.

Lead tax researchers at H&R Block give three reasons to knock it out and file once the IRS opens the process.

First, it ensures you get your refund quickly.

Second, if your refund is set to be delayed because of certain credits, you’ll be in line to get your money once it’s processed.

Third, filing early means protecting yourself from refund fraud.

As far as a shutdown, those experts say it’s hard to say what will happen because a government shutdown hasn’t happened in the middle of tax season before.

"We don’t know exactly how that’s going to play out, who is going to be deemed essential as employees for the federal government and who is going to be non-essential ... are they going to keep everyone involved who needs to process those returns are issued, we just don’t know," lead tax researcher Nathan Rigney said.

Rigney says should there be another shutdown, they will have to wait for information to come down from the IRS to know how to proceed. But until then, you can officially begin to file your taxes starting on Jan. 29.
