TOPEKA, KS (KCTV) -

People in Kansas are rallying for school choice.

They want the ability to decide where their children go to school.

School choice is one of the most controversial topics in education today. With big opinions on both sides.

It gives parents the option to send their child to the school they want.

For example, parents don’t have to be inside the school boundary of Highlands Elementary School, in Mission, KS, to enroll their child at the school.

School choice means, no matter what financial situation a family is in, or where they live, they can still send their child anywhere and do it through tax credits, launched in 2015, that would follow the child.

On Wednesday, hundreds of students, parents, teachers and community leaders will meet at the State House in Topeka, KS, to raise awareness about school choice. Students currently attending different schools will talk about why it works for them.

Protesters are planning to be at the rally.

Proponents of school choice say the most important thing is that parents get to choose and that it helps students struggling or behind in school to succeed. Students enrolled at a failing school can transfer to a better school. It targets low-income students and helps them get an advantage.

People against school choice say it takes money away from the public school system and ultimately hurts it.

Parents would have the choice to send their child to a different school or a private school. But people say private schools will never have enough seats, so it simply doesn’t work.

Wednesday’s rally begins shortly before noon.
