Family issues plea for help in killing of 9-year-old in Kansas City

Posted: Updated:

A grieving family is searching for justice after someone shot and killed a 9-year-old boy as he was riding in a truck with his father near 71 Highway and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.

Kansas City police on Tuesday released photos of the truck the young boy was riding inside.

Dominic Young, Jr.'s death has brought the family unimaginable pain, they say. They want whoever is responsible for his murder to be held accountable.

"This was my only boy," said Christine Anderson, the boy's mother. "My only boy. This was my baby."

The family is asking witnesses to come forward to help solve the murder of a 9-year-old child.

"It don't make sense," said Lisa Parker, the grandmother of the victim. "It don't make sense."

Family members say DJ grew up in a family full of many girls. Even at his young age, they say he was their protector who watched out for them as they walked to school.

Denise McCraney, DJ's great-grandmother, said she's had to comfort many people since his death.

"His classmates, his little cousins and all of my grandchildren that are crying and missing him," she said. "Do you know how many that I have to comfort? The hurt that is racking through my family right now? Right now, we can't hardly talk to them because we can't get them to stop crying enough."

McCraney pleaded with the gunman to come forward, saying he or she could be forgiven.

"I just want you to know you can be forgiven," she said. "You come forth. You admit your faults. Your shortcomings, your wrongs. Ask the Lord to forgive you and let justice be done because there is life after this one."

Investigators ask anyone who saw what happened to immediately report tips.
