A local family is searching for something irreplaceable that went missing over the weekend.

The family from Independence is looking for a necklace that contains the remains of a loved one they lost.

When Matt Brown passed away, the family had his ashes inserted into necklaces.

"He took care of his kids," said his wife Kimberly Brown. "He loved his family. He was a hard worker. Just a good spirit."

Her 19-year-old son also wears a heart pendant, but last weekend, he was walking his dogs in Dickinson Park when something felt a little off.

"He got back to the car, felt something on his neck and it was broke," Kimberly Brown said. "The charm itself can be replaced but the ashes inside - they can't."

After she posted about it on Facebook, dozens of strangers volunteered to help, offering metal detectors and even dogs to help her in the search.

Brown plans to keep looking as long as it takes.

She's asking others in the area to keep their eyes out for an invaluable memory of her loved one.

"I just know my son would be so grateful to get it back," she said. "It would mean so much to all of us."

Brown's family is asking people who want to help to join a search party Thursday, which is planned for 11 a.m.
