KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The American Red Cross in urgent need of donors as bad weather and the harsh flu season leave blood supplies at critical lows.

The Red Cross has had to cancel more than 550 blood drives in the metro area this month alone, and it has put them behind by more than 16,000 donations.

“Blood and platelet donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in,” said Joe Zydlo, external communications manager, Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “Donors are critically needed to restock the shelves for patients in their community as well as areas where donors are unable to give due to inclement weather.”

Every day, the Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations to meet the needs of patients.

There are dozens of blood drives planned for the Kansas City area over the next month.
