When winter weather hits, getting stuck in snow and ice while on the roads can be frightening.

But now, there’s an app for that.

For those with an Android phone, the app may be life-saving. It’s called "Winter Survival Kit" and can be found in the Google Play Store.

The app is easy to set up. Users enter any emergency phone numbers, such as police, family, insurance providers and even policy numbers for insurance or AAA.

App users will then be one step closer to being able to make these phone calls in case of an emergency.

The app also allows users to enter the gas tank capacity for their vehicle and what the gas gauge shows at that time. The app will then display an estimate for how long drivers can run their vehicle to stay warm.

For those stuck on the side of the road and worried about carbon monoxide poisoning, the app can also help with that.

While in the vehicle, if people begin to feel drowsy, the app will send an alert, every 30 minutes, to remind them to turn off their vehicle to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. The app also gives tips such as making sure the exhaust pipe is clear.

The app also allows users to send their location to people in their contact list or post it on their Facebook wall.

Inside the app, users can also find information about what should be pre-packed in the event they become stranded.

A version is available for iPhone owners. However, it does not have all the tools that the Android version does.

Neither of the apps will work if the phone battery dies, so a fully-charged portable charger is a good thing to have on hand.
