TOPEKA, KS (KCTV) -

The State of Kansas could have a new governor by the end of the week.

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) said the Senate is moving ahead with Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback's nomination to be Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom.

Roberts said he's "looking forward to approving the nomination as early as this week."

In a tweet, Brownback thanked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Roberts.

Once Brownback's nomination is approved, Kansas Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will become the new governor.
