LIBERTY, MO (KCTV) -

A father and his 8-year-old son are in critical condition after a wrong-way crash in Liberty.

Family and friends are asking for prayers as they go through this tough time.

“To have a head-on collision like that, you’re talking about a massive crash for them to be alive … thank God,” said Bruce West, father and grandfather of the victims.

West is having to deal with what no parent ever wants to face.

His son, Joshua West and 8-year-old grandson, Nate West, were badly injured in a crash early Sunday morning.

Just after midnight, a 20-year-old woman driving south in the northbound lanes on Interstate 35 near the intersection of Highway 219 crashed into Joshua West head-on.

He was taken to Liberty Hospital and his son to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Bruce West believes divine intervention is why he’s able to hug both his son and grandson.

“Somebody watched out for my kids. I’ve already told my son, ‘Hey, God loves you. He spared your life. You’ve got an opportunity to do something with it,’” he said.

Madison Mortallaro, the driver of the vehicle going the wrong way, is accused driving while intoxicated by drugs.
