KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A fire ripped through what looks like an empty building, but some say it is an artist collective and music studio.

The former Fountain Theater at East Ninth Street and Tracy Avenue was completely engulfed in flames Thursday morning. No one was inside the building at the time.

At this point, it is unknown how much damage the fire caused, but the former owners say thousands of dollars in renovations were completed in the last three years.

Nearly half the roof was destroyed in the fire. Flames ate away at the concrete and metal structure leaving behind an unsafe place for people to go in to. But, artists were at the building on Thursday trying to figure out what to do next.

The previous owners say the building was built in the 1930s.

Right now, it's unknown if the 88-year-old building will be repaired or knocked down.
