LEAVENWORTH, KS (KCTV) -

A Leavenworth High School teacher is the recent winner of KCTV5's Read to Achieve program.

Flavia Frierson received a $1,000 check from the Kansas chapter of the National Education Association.

She was nominated by Quintin Sherrod.

"I would like to enter Ms. Frierson. She is a sophomore English teacher and a German teacher. She gives us reading logs and spelling tests to help us with our grammar skills and others needed in the real world. When we have class there is always a lesson that means something. Her husband just died a couple weeks ago, I think, and she is sad. I would like to help her by entering her in this contest. Hopefully she can win and I can make a difference in here life like she did to me," Sherrod said.

The Missouri and Kansas NEAs are sponsoring Read to Achieve. If you would like to nominate a teacher, click here.
