Family forced into bitter cold after house fire in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Kansas City Fire Department’s Bomb and Arson squad is searching for what caused a house fire that forced three adults and three children into the frigid cold early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire shortly after 1 a.m. in the 3300 block of Bales Avenue.

Officials say the fire started on the back porch, forcing all six people to find another place to stay.

It’s been a rough morning for home renter Sherri Jordan, running on little to no sleep and worrying about her children.

“Not good,” Jordan said. “I just, I haven’t really been in this house long and I came from homelessness before I got here and it’s like I’m going right back out there.”

She says it was after 1 a.m. when she started to smell smoke and knew something wasn’t right.

“I came downstairs. I was looking around and my kids were like, ‘you smell that too?’”

That’s when Jordan saw flames near the back of the house and in the kitchen.

“It was coming from the back of the door and coming this way,” Jordan said.

Jordan, her husband and three children, as well as a friend who is staying with them, were able to stay at their next-door neighbor’s house. But now, she’s not sure if, or when, she can come back home.

“It’s a lot. It’s a lot and I don’t know if I’m going to be coming back here or need to find somewhere else to stay,” Jordan said.

The American Red Cross has stepped in to help. Jordan is hoping to find a hotel for her family to stay at.

“Don’t know how long this is going to take and I got kids, that’s hurtful,” Jordan added.
