KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Gene Lamont has been hired by the Kansas City Royals as a special assistant to the general manager.

Lamont managed the Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates to a collective record of 553-562.

He was named the American League's Manager of the Year Award in 1993 after guiding the Chicago White Sox to the AL West title.

“We are delighted that Gene will be joining the Royals as a member of our baseball operations department," Royals General Manager Dayton Moore said. “He has a wealth of experience and will be a strong addition to our organization.”

He also served as a minor league manager for the Royals from 1978-85.
