Semi flips on its side as slick roads cause wrecks in metro

Posted: Updated:

Drivers in the Kansas City metro woke up to fresh-fallen snow and some slick roads Sunday morning, causing a semi tractor trailer to flip over in a crash that involved four vehicles on the interstate.

Police and emergency crews responded just after 8 a.m. to eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 near Quivira Road in Overland Park, Kan. A semi and a passenger car had flipped over in a crash that involved four vehicles total. Emergency crews said there were no major injuries from the wreck. Crews said the semi had slid off the roadway, causing a chain-reaction crash.

By 1:30 p.m., the truck had been uprighted and was loaded on a truck so it could be moved off the highway.

Several other crashes peppered the metro area, although there have been no major injuries so far, as of 9 a.m.

A multi-vehicle crash around 8:30 a.m. had I-70 down to one eastbound lane near I-470 in Independence, Mo. Police said there were no injuries in that crash.

Other crashes that impacted interstate traffic and shut down some lanes included I-435 westbound at State Line Road, I-35 southbound at 95th Street, U.S. 69 Highway northbound at 87th Street, I-35 southbound at Antioch and I-35 southbound at 18th Street Expressway.

A sport utility vehicle slid off of the roadway and down an embankment on westbound I-70 in Independence around 5:30 a.m. A pickup went off the road and into a side ditch also along westbound I-70 around the same time near Manchester Trafficway in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas City police reported several surface street crashes because of the slick conditions during the morning, as well.
