KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A student at Center Alternative School was taken into custody after bringing a gun to school, police say.

Officers were called about 7:45 a.m. to the school located at 8434 Paseo.

A school administrator told police they received a tip from a parent before school started that a student had a gun in their backpack. Police were then notified police, and the weapon was confiscated immediately before the student arrived at school.

The juvenile was later taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

The Center School District sent the following letter to parents:

"...We are sending this message to you to confirm that we called the police to Center Alternative School this morning because a student brought a gun to school.  We want to emphasize to you as parents and family members that the system worked.  We received a tip from a parent before school started that a student had a gun in their backpack. We immediately called the police and upon the student arriving at school, the weapon was confiscated immediately.

We have been working with police, staff and students since then to ensure our school day resumes and continues as safely and smoothly as possible.

As always, the safety of our students and staff is our priority.  We are grateful the process worked to have this situation taken care of immediately and in a safe way."
