KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A police pursuit that began in Independence after two people were hit in a motel parking lot stretched into Kansas City, injuring five people on Sunday night.

The chase started at about 8:15 p.m. as an Independence police officer was on a routine patrol along US-40 Highway and pulled into the parking lot of a motel in the 9800 block of E US-40.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office on Monday charged Dennis J. Mead III. He faces a felony charge of resisting a lawful stop.

Charging documents state that police attempted to stop the suspect in the parking lot of a hotel on U.S. 40 Highway.

As the officer pulled in, he saw a gray Ford Escape quickly accelerate from a parked position and hit two people who were standing in the parking lot. The Ford Escape, which was later determined to be a stolen vehicle, then fled from the officer.

Police chased the vehicle into Kansas City where it hit a pickup truck with three people inside, who were not involved in the pursuit, near the area of Blue Parkway and Bellaire Avenue.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a passenger and the three people inside the pickup truck were all hurt and taken to area hospitals.

Police have not given an injury status about the two people hit in the parking lot of the motel.

Independence police officer and public information officer John Syme said there has been an issue with crime in hotel parking lots.

"It's pretty frequent for patrol officers on the south side of town to check all hotels and motels," Syme said. "We’ve had crime in hotel parking lots throughout independence."

Additional charges are possible.

A $150,000 bond has been requested.
