JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A 24-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in a fatal stabbing that happened outside a city bus last year.

Malliek D. Haynes, 24, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Alton Hughes was fatally stabbed on Nov. 28, 2017.

According to court records, Kansas City police went to Independence Avenue and Woodland that day and found Hughes suffering from a puncture wound.

He was soon pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police that they saw the suspect, later identified as Haynes, push the victim to the ground and stand over him. They said he appeared to punch him. Soon after that, they saw the victim bleeding.

Haynes reportedly stabbed Hughes with a folding knife.

Surveillance from the bus captured the incident and showed the victim walking backward until he fell, then Haynes leaning over him. A stain can subsequently be seen on the front of the victim's shirt.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000 cash.
