UPDATE 1/8 - Police in Olathe say the two children have been located and are safe.

The Olathe Police Department will continue to investigate the situation.

Police responded Thursday on a report of child endangerment after a Facebook video was posted showing two young children entering the trunk of a vehicle.

ORIGINAL STORY

Authorities are seeking information after a video surfaced on social media depicting two young children being placed in the trunk of a vehicle.

This comes after Olathe police responded Thursday to the 800 block of South Parker Street on a report of child endangerment.

Officers say they were made aware of a video posted on Facebook showing two young children entering in the trunk of a grey 2000s model Volkswagen Jetta, with Kansas plates 616KLC, shortly before the vehicle drove away.

The Olathe Police Department is currently investigating this incident in an effort to locate the vehicle and its occupants.

"We received multiple phone calls and messages on our social media account about this video which prompted our officers to begin viewing this video and investigating," said Sgt. Logan Bonney. "They responded to the area and checked the area, but obviously, no one was there."

"This is a short video clip," Bonney said, "and we want find out what happened on the other ends of this clip, and that's why we think its so important that we find the people that were in this vehicle and talk to them and kind of see what was going on and make a determination on what we need to do to move forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Olathe Police Department at 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Residents in the area say they hope the police are able to get to the bottom of what happened but are mostly upset about the way people handled it.

"If somebody saw it and took the time to video it, why didn't you just call 911 instead of putting it on social media where then it blows up and people start talking about it and nobody really knows what happened?" said Tammie Drake from Olathe.

While the video originated in a Facebook group, it was taken down, which further complicates matters.

KCTV5 will continue to follow this and bring you update on-air and online as they become available.
