KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Officials believe a methane gas leak caused an explosion and fire at a metro waste water treatment plant on Wednesday night.

The explosion happened at about 10:21 p.m. at the plant located at 7300 Hawthorne Road.

Firefighters say the explosion was likely caused by the leak and say it caused a building at the plant to partially collapse, shattering several windows.

Officials at the plant say the damage was mostly structural and that it did not affect the continuing treatment of waste water.

The building was occupied at the time of the explosion but officials say the area where it happened did not have any workers in it.

No injuries were reported.

When fire crews arrived, they say they saw flames from the second floor of the building. Officials at the plant told firefighters that the methane gas tanks were stored on the second floor of the building

While battling the flames, fire crews did not enter the room where the fire was as they focused on venting the pressure out of the room.

Train traffic at KC Southern Railroad was briefly stopped while firefighters battled the flames.
