CARROLLTON, MO (KCTV) -

Power is back on in Carrollton after a blown fuse left the entire town powerless on a bitterly cold night.

The local utility provider has been replacing the 70-year-old system that powers the town. Once the fuse went out, the power company had to work for hours to power up the backup generators to restore power until they could fix it.

Several people told KCTV5 News that they could feel an immediate drop in the temperature when the outage. The city established warming zones at the school and other public buildings to protect people from subzero temperatures.

Carrollton Municipal Utilities restored power just after midnight Tuesday.

"We're just really lucky we had a plan in place and we could restore everything within six hours. It's a big plus that we could do it in such a short time," Carrollton Municipal Utilities superintendent Clint Mathis said.

The city’s mayor, police and city council members also went door-to-door to check on residents to make sure everyone was OK.
