KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

An emergency overnight cold shelter in Kansas City, KS is taking things to the next level in the brutal cold.

The Bridge of Hope Community Church is in its second year offering air mattresses and blankets in its modest sanctuary any night it drops below 20 degrees.

On Monday, they stayed open all day because public shelters like libraries were closed for the holiday.

Those who’ve used the shelter say it’s a more intimate experience than big shelters, which they’d have to walk to the Missouri side to get to. And it’s meaningful to them that the pastor was homeless himself for eight years.

“He can relate and then he gives us hope because that’s the one thing you don’t want to lose out here is hope, because once you lose that, it’s over with," said Michael Montgomery who is homeless.

Last week when KCTV5 News visited, they had 15 guests. Sunday night, they had 24.
