KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It is a tradition 40 years in the making, and a Lee's Summit family wasn't about to let Mother Nature on Monday stand in the way of hitting an impressive mark.

Football, family, friends and faith -- that's what it's all about at a park in the Lakewood subdivision in Lee's Summit.

It's a tradition they're not stopping anytime soon.

Rather than watch football inside on the couch like most on New Years, they play the sport.

"We thought, you know, we were in high school, we thought instead of being spectators, let's be participants. Let's start our own game," Domenic Rizzi said.

But with wind chills well below zero, this was no ordinary New Year's Day.  Turns out, it doesn't matter. Not even injury can stop this group.

Bob Metulis has been playing with the group for more than 25 years, and the reasons are simple.

"You get out. You can exercise. You're out with your friends," he said.

Some years, they've had as many as 40 players, but on this day in the bone-chilling cold, there weren't quite as many brave souls. They were happy souls though, and that's all that matters.

Players say they'd like to continue playing until they hit at least 50 years, and at the rate they're going, that shouldn't be a problem at all.
