LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

A 1-year-old Lawrence girl was killed in an accidental shooting Friday morning, police say.

Officers were called shortly after 10:30 a.m. to a home in the 600 block of North Michigan Street on a report of a shooting involving a child.

Despite life-saving measures attempted by first responders, she died from the injuries sustained a short time later.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading up the incident.

Police say they are not currently looking for anyone involved in the shooting.

No other information has been released at this time.

Neighbors say a young couple recently moved into the home.

KCTV5 News spoke with a woman who is close to the family.

Janell Precht was on her way to dinner when she saw crime tape surrounding her friend’s home.

“We have been friends for over a year,” she said. “They are good parents.”

She didn't know why the tape was there until she asked around. Then she found out that the couple whose kids she played with and babysat for had lost their daughter, Autumn, in an accidental shooting.

She knows the feeling all too well. Her 2-year-old, Brody, died last April. He suffocated on his own phlegm while napping.

"It is hell,” she said. “It is hell losing a child."

"You ask yourself over and over what you could have done and guilt and blame consumes you,” she said.

She has a memorial garden for Brody in her yard, just a few blocks away, that is filled with toy trucks. Her friend, Megan, helped her through the loss that still pains her.

Now, she shares a bond with that friend that no one would ever wish for.

Precht hardly has to think of the words she has for the couple.

"Same words that she's told me for the past year, which is, ‘Brody wouldn't want to see you crying,’” she said. “’Brody knows that you were there. Brody knows you did everything you can.’”

“You can't blame people for accidents,” she said, “because we blame ourselves enough.”

She said Autumn was the couple’s youngest child. They also have a 3-year-old son.

One neighbor said he was sorry to hear about what happened to the couple's baby.

"I was very very sad about that," said neighbor John Skubin. "Anytime a child loses their chance at life, it's a sad, sad thing. I've seen a lot of death in my time and children were always the worst."

A GoFundMe account has been established to help with funeral costs. Click here to donate.
