Craigslist seller scams woman buying tickets to Bruno Mars concert for son

Posted: Updated:

One woman was scammed after purchasing tickets to the Bruno Mars concert.

She wants to share her story in hopes that it won’t happen to someone else.

Thousands of fans flocked to the Sprint Center to see Bruno Mars perform this past Wednesday, but before the concert started, the night hit a low note when one Olathe mother and her 6-year-old son got up to this gate.

Jennifer Butler was struggling to track down a pair of Bruno Mars tickets for her son’s 6th birthday.

“Against my better judgment, there was someone on Craigslist selling hard tickets with the receipt,” she said. “They gave me their phone number, willing to meet in public.”

Butler says she met the lady at Crowne Center the day of the concert. She swapped $600 in cash for the tickets.

“I showed her a picture of Prince and said he just turned 6, he loves Bruno Mars,” she said. “This is who you are sending to the concert, so thank you. I even gave her a hug.”

However, when Butler and her son Prince got to the ticket counter, their tickets didn’t work.

“They declined. We talked to the Ticketmaster. They were fake tickets. It was truly devastating.”

Butler said it was a hard lesson to learn.

She has since filed a police report with the Kansas City Police Department.

“It would have been so good to give him that experience and share it with him, but it just, you know, didn’t happen,” she said.

It's important to keep in mind if you purchase tickets through the Sprint Center or on a secondary website like StubHub, you’re protected against scammers.

If you decide to purchase tickets elsewhere, you’re running a greater risk of being scammed.
