For the Kansas City Chiefs, there is no quarterback controversy for the team’s starting position.

But there is a battle for the second spot on the depth chart.

Quarterback Tyler Bray is currently listed as the backup to starter Alex Smith, but a lot of the attention falls on the third name on the chart - rookie Patrick Mahomes.

Bray is expected to play the second quarter for the team in Friday night’s preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers, while Mahomes is expected to take over in the third quarter.

"They've put in a lot of work, Tyler in particular," Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said, "and he's done a really good job at mentally getting into it. He's had some opportunities in preseason, so I know he's really looking forward to just coming out here and trying to do the best he can."

Mahomes is the first quarterback the Chiefs have selected in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983.

While the attention is on Mahomes, the preseason isn’t too much of an indicator of a quarterback’s future.

In his first game as a New England Patriot in 2000, quarterback Tom Brady was 3-of-4 for 28 yards. In his preseason debut for the Packers, Aaron Rodgers was just 2-of-6 for 7 yards.

Brady and Rodgers turned out just fine.
