KEARNEY, MO (KCTV) -

A cruel trick on Kearney bike path left a local cyclist injured. Now, police are trying to find the person responsible.

Lieutenant John Stewart said a 76-year-old man on a recumbent bike hit something on the path that wasn't supposed to be there. It was right underneath the Highway 33 bridge over the fishing river.

Someone had lined up large rocks, blocking the path.

“He couldn't see them because they were in the shadows,” Stewart said. “He ran into them causing injuries.”

Kearney police suspect someone was trying to play a sick joke and that the rocks had been placed there earlier that day.

“They couldn't have been there too long because that's a heavily used trail and I think someone would have called us,” Stewart explained.

The crash sent the rider to the hospital.

The city parks director told KCTV5 over the phone that he was sickened that someone would block the path intentionally trying to hurt someone. The city is asking for help finding whoever moved the rocks.

“People are there to enjoy it and make themselves healthier,” Stewart said, “Then they come to an obstacle that's not supposed to be there and they're injured. And it could be serious injuries. In this case, it's an assault.”

Police say the crash also did $800 worth of damage to the bike.
