Classes started for kindergarteners Gardner Elementary on Friday. High schoolers were supposed to return as well, but the district pushed that back to next week.

While parents walked their little ones into their first day of school with high-fives from their principal, parents of high schoolers have a few more hours of summer.

Freshmen and new students start on Monday. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors start on Tuesday.

“We just wanted to make sure that our facility was absolutely perfect and ready for our kids, and we needed to give our teachers a little bit of breathing room as well,” said Mark Meyer, Principal at Gardner Edgerton High School.

Meyer said they are busy putting the final touches on their new building.

“By pushing it back a day, it’s also giving us a couple days over the weekend if we need that time as well,” Meyer said.

The yearlong project was threefold.

Students will come back to 18 new classrooms. There’s also a standalone facility that is for students 18 to 21 years old who are enrolled in a living skills program.

Now, students can pick up more college and career skills in a new advanced technical center.

Meyer said, “It’s almost like a brand new beginning.” He also said it gives the district room to expand in the future.

This year, 100 new students will walk through the doors and the district now has room for 400 more students than last year.

“I have 15 additional staff members now to help compensate for some of the growth that is coming our way so that we are ready and built for the future,” Meyer said.
