Tools, equipment targeted in smash and grab business robberies

Posted: Updated:

Police are looking to find thieves who used a hammer and truck to bash their way inside to steal equipment from a Smithville business.

At Bledsoe's Rental off Wornall. they are taking extra steps to protect their business by parking heavy machinery near their front doors.

A hammer wielding criminal is the first person in 17 years to break into Coleman Equipment Inc. in Smithville.

"We'd like to catch them," said Johnnie Walker, the manager at the store. "We are hard working people out here."

Two accomplices climbed into the store as the three thieves spent just three minutes smashing, then grabbing chainsaws, yard blowers, and concrete saws. Everything they swiped was the same well known brand.

"They went directly for the STIHL items," Walker said. "They didn't go for anything else."

In Kansas City, four suspects used a truck to yank iron security bars from Bledsoe's Rental. Then they used a truck tailgate to ram through the glass. It took them just one minute to grab armloads of STIHL equipment.

"I think that same week they hit several spots around town," said Brad Burris, the owner of Bledsoe's Rental. "They've definitely done it before."

It's unclear if the cases are connected. In both crimes the culprits wore hoodies and gloves.

If you recognize the any of these getaway vehicles or the suspects call police.

The victims KCTV5 spoke to say two other businesses, including one in Parkville and another in Pleasant Hill, were also burglarized.

Anyone with information can call 816-474-TIPS.
