CLINTON, MO (KCTV) -

The family of fallen Clinton police officer Gary Michael is relieved after the arrest of suspected cop-killer Ian McCarthy.

Michael was a father, a husband, a military veteran. He was a man of service and that’s why he joined the Clinton Police Department less than a year ago.

His family, including his wife Cindy, are relieved and had hoped that his suspected killer would be caught alive so in their words, “justice could be served. ”

His brother spoke first to KCTV5 about the moment he received a text message that the man accused of killing his brother was captured.

"There was a moment of joy for myself, for Cindy, for my family, and for my brother," said Chris Michael. "I think I was most proud of my brother. He really represented us well."

Michael’s family says the arrest is a step in the right direction for his family, for the community and for the country who’s been mourning.

"We're just happy that we're going to be able to put this one band-aid in a long process of healing on, and start to move forward," Michael said.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Thursday outside the Henry County Court House.
