National Bikers Roundup in Grain Valley canceled due to weather

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of motorcyclists were at Valley Speedway before the rain moved in, but they risked getting stuck in the mud if they didn’t get out in time.

The National Bikers Roundup started on Wednesday and drew thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the area.

There were two days left of the convention, but it got rained out.

“It’s a ghost town now, but you couldn’t see the ground yesterday,” said Jewell Strother.

“It was packed last night, so you can only imagine what it would’ve been like today and tonight,” Melvin Merritt said. “Very disappointing. Very disappointing.”

Vendors took down their tents and cleanup crews worked around the mud and pools of water. A garbage truck even got trapped in the muck.

“Your Kansas weather got us stuck in the mud,” Floyd Evans said. “We woke up to a mud pit instead of a Harley ride.”

Evans and his friends came all the way from Louisiana for the event.

He was confident he could get his truck and trailer through the mud. “Give it gas and don’t look back,” he said.

The speedway’s owner told KCTV5 News they made the call to cancel because they didn’t want thousands of motor homes, motorcycles, and campers getting stuck in the storms.
