KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A new skyscraper is preparing to be added to the Kansas City skyline.

The Two Light Luxury Apartment Complex is having its topping out celebration on Friday.

A large crowd, joined by city officials, took part in the ceremony as the building’s last beam was put into place.

Topping out is a construction industry tradition held when the last beam is placed atop a structure. It usually takes place when the building is approximately 75-percent completed and includes the placement of an evergreen or a tree branch at the topmost point, signifying the “topping off” point.

Two Light is located at 14th and Walnut streets, south of the Power & Light District. The luxury apartment complex will open in the spring of 2018.

The $105 million project will feature an infinity pool and will house 300 units.

Apartments are going fast, at a rate of four to five leases per week.

When One Light Luxury Apartment Complex opened, it was already at 80-percent occupancy.

Executive Director of the Kansas City Power & Light District, Nick Benjamin, says this speaks to the level of demand and interest in the downtown area.

“One Light has catalyzed a huge residential boom. Two Light is just going to accelerate that, so we are getting really close to the goal of 40,000 people living downtown,” Benjamin said.

Officials say Three Light Luxury Apartment Complex is already in the works, with construction starting in June of 2018. The third complex will be located on Walnut Street, across from Two Light.
