JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for fatally shooting a woman in 2015.

Dewayne Cornelius was convicted of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in June of this year.

On Thursday, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison by a Jackson County judge.

Court records say that Cornelius and the victim, Nicole Appleberry, were living together.

On May 25, 2015, police found 27-year-old Appleberry in a residence in the 3200 block of E. 28th St. She had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told the police that Cornelius had told them he was the one who shot the woman, who was referred to as "Nikki."

Police recovered a gun, which had fired spent shell casings that were found at the scene.
