LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

The roads in Lenexa are getting crowded and now there's a push to make more room for bicyclists.

There are no bike lanes in Lenexa and that is something iBike Lenexa says is a problem.

Jeff Carroll is an avid cyclist and organized the group.

Carroll bikes to work from Lenexa to downtown Kansas City twice a week. He says there is a big difference between the bicycle infrastructure in Lenexa, compared to neighboring cities.

“If you look at the surrounding cities like Shawnee, Olathe, Overland Park, they’ve all made a lot of progress in getting bicycle infrastructure in place, but those bicycle lanes, when they get to Lenexa, they stop. So, we really have a big black hole in Lenexa where we really don’t have any bicycle infrastructure,” Carroll said.

Now the group is hoping to work with the city council on a plan to make the city more bike friendly.

Carroll says he would like to see the city add new bike lanes, but a short term goal would be the addition of more signage and education to make sure drivers know that bicyclists are allowed on the road.

“So I think that the big question is how quickly we can move forward, but we do want to point out the fact that we are behind," Carroll said. "So when you are behind in a race like this, you need to take some steps to move forward as quickly as possible.”

Carroll says, so far, the group has had great support from the Lenexa City Council and says even just raising awareness of the issue is helping.
