KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It will take a few weeks before things get back to normal on Interstate 670 near Troost.

Traffic was clogged up Tuesday on I-670 westbound near Troost after the driver of an asphalt truck lost control of the vehicle.

Kansas City police have now charged Shea Thompson with a DUI.

Investigators say he slammed his tar truck into one barrier, then veered off and struck another one near I-70 and I-670.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it will take two weeks for the damage to be repaired.

"Luckily for us, the bridge functioned as it was supposed to, but now we have resulting damage and we have to go in and fix it," said MoDOT's James Pflum.

Despite the fact that bridge did function the way it was supposed to, chunks of concrete fell onto Troost below, fortunately missing drivers.

Both lanes of the highway closed about an hour while Missouri Department of Transportation crews addressed the area.

Troost Avenue was closed from 13th Street south to Truman Avenue.

The bridges in the area are all about 40 to 50 years old, but they carefully inspect them every couple of years.

MODOT says when you're traveling in the area make sure to merge over as early as possible
